There are four main salvage categories (A,B,C and D) and three lesser categories (F,X and Unrecorded).
Of the lesser categories Cat F salvage refers to vehicles with fire damage, Cat X salvage refers to vehicles with repairable minor damage and although Unrecorded is not an official category it is often seen in private adverts. It usually means that the owner only had third party insurance, they damaged the vehicle themselves, and can’t make a claim. More often than not they can’t afford to carry out the repairs required to put it back on the road.
Of the main categories Cat A salvage can't be returned to the road and the entire vehicle must be crushed, including all spare parts. Usually these are cars that have been burnt out. Cat B salvage can't be returned to the road either, but spare parts may be salvaged and sold for spares. The vehicle body shell must be crushed though.
The two remaining categories are considered repairable salvage. Cat C salvage is repairable but generally has structural damage. The cost of damage (at main dealer prices and labour rates) is more than the book value so insurers have written off the vehicle. Cat D salvage on the other hand normally doesn't have structural damage, just panel damage or damge to the interior of the vehicle. Many Cat D salvage cars are economic and safe to repair, but the insurer has decided not.
